An unusual glow emanates from around the corner

A planked and side lit walkway guides you forward

Connecting a Connecticut residence and its detached outbuilding there is an
underground tunnel.
Upon entering, at the end of a gangway you are introduced to an unusual glow emanating from
around the corner…

Mysteriously, the slug-like sculpture is enslaved
in this passage but ultimately is liberated by its cycle of illumination, affecting the mood of each passerby.
Formed by hundreds of smooth translucent polygonal boxes, the figure rises up and bridges over the pathway.

The texture is decidedly smooth and modern in contrast to the raw formed concrete surfaces it clings to...

The tunnel acts as both a passage and a destination.
A planked and side lit walkway guides you forward giving the sense of floating in space.
 

There are more than 16 million color combinations, however the majority of those varied hues are beyond the ability of the human eye to see, a testament to the fact that we are imprisoned by our limited senses. The slug makes the experience of moving between the Residence and the outbuilding not only an exploration of light and form, but also transcending what is superficial or obvious.

The concept for the project is related to Einstein’s Theory
of Relativity which describes wormholes as a topological feature that would fundamentally be a shortcut across the universe by traveling on the space-time relationship. A wormhole is much like a tunnel with two ends, each in separate points in space time.















Beinfield Architecture recently completed this project which involved uniquely modern twists on classic Connecticut vernacular style. The components included 9,000 sq.ft. residence, a media building housing a sculpture gallery, theater, and observatory, and this underground tunnel that connects the two. 

The Pearl of Rowaton

Beinfield Architecture transforms a former working oyster house in the quaint coastal village of Oysterman's Row in Rowayton, CT.  We are honored to have Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Magazine feature this awesome house in their 10 Years of Design September 2014 issue.

“One of the more remarkable aspects of the house is the way it fits together in a three-dimensional kind of way,” says Beinfeld. “We were able to give them so many areas to enjoy, each with its own personality."

"The biggest challenge," says project architect Mark Goodwin, "was creating enough storage space."

These floors are making it hard not to think of sailing away to some far away island!

Wine Cave Wins CT AIA Award!



Beinfield Architecture has received the Connecticut AIA's 2012 Encompassing Art Award. Thank you to our wonderful clients for letting us work together in creating this amazing space. 

Monday night at the Long Wharf Theater was an exciting evening for the designers of Beinfield Architecture.  James Wassell accepted a drawing award. Bruce Beinfield FAIA accepted the Business in Architecture Award for Volo Aviation. And Andrew Bartolotta AIA accepted the Encompassing the Art Award for the wine cave pictured below. 

Those great back lit colored barrels? That's creative use of snare drum forms!

The AIA's jury has this to say about the space:

The wine cellar is playful, celebratory, and innovative. With economy of means, it uses a new vocabulary of project type.

The New England Landscape

We've had an incredible summer in New England this year and we are trying to soak up every last moment.  On this beautiful first Monday in August, we want to share a couple of our outbuildings. Outbuildings are typically associated with chores, but 'work' doesn't even come to mind when contemplating these elegant structures right at home in the lush summer landscape.

Recent Work | Old Greenwich Residence

Summertime photo shoots are so rewarding. We get to visit with great clients whose homes were finished months ago. We see how they are utilizing the spaces we've created and we experience the landscaping coming into it's own.  The landscape architect on this wonderful Old Greenwich home, Steven Stimson Associates, created an elegant setting for this waterfront property.

Dubbed "World's Coolest Master Suite" by CTC&G

Bruce and the firm got a mention in this month's Connecticut Cottages & Gardens "Deeds & Don'ts" for an Old Greenwich luxury residence of a few years ago.  The incredible 7,800 square foot, waterfront home is described as having "what has to be the world's coolest master suite, with a private sitting room and deck."

Personally, I'm partial to the outdoor kitchen, dining area and fireplace.  With that view, and the Beinfield design, inside is outside, and outside is in!

It's on the market, listed with Sotheby's in Greenwich, if you want to call it home.

AIA Connecticut Design Commission honors Beinfield Architecture once again in 2011

We are thrilled to announce Beinfield Architecture's 2011 AIA CT Design Award for their new single family Home in Ridgefield.  This incredible house definitely makes our list of favorite projects and clients.  Congratulations to Andrew Bartolotta AIA, Bruce Beinfield FAIA and the rest of the Project Team for the creativity, hard work, and attention to detail that made this project come to fruition.  Oh, and we had some fun too.

This is what the jurors had to say about the project:

This project is based on simple space and volumetric strategies. It provides a simple but effective stage for collections, a stage setting for the content of the building. The traditional heavy post and beam construction makes sense of the chaos of the collection. The New England barn is ideal for a collection such as this, providing form, but observers can see that something else is going on here. There are two important elements on the outside, the first is the translucent glass link, a very effective rhythm maker and the second is the “sideness” of the scheme, wherein the front is relatively impenetrable, but there is open glazing on the backside, making for a very different experience.

Simple New England Charm

One of the benefits of living and working in Connecticut, is living and working in Connecticut. New England is beautiful. And architecturally, it's history is rich with simple charm and functional beauty.

The materials for this inviting house were carefully chosen to evoke the farm buildings of New England: white clapboard, rustic fieldstone base and cedar roof.  The white-on-white sculptural starkness is most evident in the wide board window trim and articulated entry.

The interiors provide calm for the client by reflecting the casual nature of country living. Tons of light and clean white materials bathe the house with warmth and elegance.  We are thrilled with this house, and it's ability to satisfy our client's vision for a simple and charming New England retreat.

Spring Can't Arrive Quickly Enough

The huge piles of snow seemed to linger interminably this year, but everything is wet and melting.  Colin even came in this week and said stuff is happening in his garden already! So for me that means spring photo shoots.  I can't wait to get out to our recently or just-about-completed residential projects and grab some more shots!

Bruce took these at the edge of fall last year with his little point and shoot, and I have to say, they are not bad!  I knew that man had a good eye.

And we have an amazing project coming together in Wilton that's just screaming to be photographed.  I got a few shots last year before the weather turned and I've been dreaming about getting back there ever since.
