Beinfield Architecture Recognized by AIA for Strong, Cohesive and Sustainable Design

AIA Connecticut 2016 Business Architecture Program granted top honors to Beinfield Architecture for the firm’s design of North American Power’s headquarters in Norwalk, CT

Beinfield Architecture was selected to receive AIA’s prestigious award commending architects and their clients whose projects enhance the built environment and achieve business goals. It is the South Norwalk firm’s 82nd design award.

North American Power wanted to encourage a team-based environment that would reflect the company mission to support and promote
sustainable resources. Their space had to speak of green energy. 

  C.M.O. Greg Breitbart comments  “We are immensely satisfied with the outcome of the project. Our office not only makes a wonderful first impression with first-time visitors, it continues to excite and inspire those of us who have been here for years. In addition to the innovative design throughout the office, the open and transparent layout-no cubicles, glass offices, and a minimal amount of walled space-supports cross-department collaboration and a greater sense of team”.

At the core of the work environment are recycled and sustainable materials branding the North American Power as a progressive 21st century energy provider. The living walls form an indoor garden, with plants that oxygenate the air. Systems are exposed to make the work space more dynamic than the typical corporate cast. Live edge wood conference tables are juxtaposed against classic mid-century modern and industrial pieces to enrich the space.

A mix of furniture from mid-century masters Le Corbusier and Mies Van der Rohe, along with
a collection of reclaimed industrial artifacts make the space feel much more like a sophisticated New York loft than a corporate office. The café was designed as a place to gather around expresso machine, sending a message to the employees that this is both a cool and caring community.

The AIA jury (Don Crowe, AIA, Lucy Diaz, and Karen Lika) noted that “the strong, cohesive design brought the values of the company to life and fostered both collaboration and energy in the work place. The use of materials seemed authentic and reflected the company ethos. The project’s sustainable design supports the company vision of moving toward sustainable energy resources. The project fulfilled the company desire that the space evoke the company’s sincerity in preserving and protecting the environment and speak of green energy.”

Founding Principal Bruce Beinfield FAIA noted that, “this award was a great honor, and is a tribute to a dedicated professional team with the creative skills to find the art in Architecture. Our thanks go out to Corporate Design LLC, who we partnered with on this commission.”

Wine Cave Wins CT AIA Award!



Beinfield Architecture has received the Connecticut AIA's 2012 Encompassing Art Award. Thank you to our wonderful clients for letting us work together in creating this amazing space. 

Monday night at the Long Wharf Theater was an exciting evening for the designers of Beinfield Architecture.  James Wassell accepted a drawing award. Bruce Beinfield FAIA accepted the Business in Architecture Award for Volo Aviation. And Andrew Bartolotta AIA accepted the Encompassing the Art Award for the wine cave pictured below. 

Those great back lit colored barrels? That's creative use of snare drum forms!

The AIA's jury has this to say about the space:

The wine cellar is playful, celebratory, and innovative. With economy of means, it uses a new vocabulary of project type.

Bruce Beinfield FAIA Inducted into New England Design Hall of Fame

Last week, after the crazy fall Nor'easter, Bruce traveled to Boston to be inducted into the New England Design Hall of Fame! Here he is with his distinguished colleagues. You can check out the great write-up on Bruce's architecture and design philosophy in the current New England Home Magazine, on news stands through January.

We received great news this week! Beinfield Architecture was a recipient of the Connecticut AIA's 2012 Business in Architecture Award. We'd like to thank our client, Volo Aviation, the vector for visionaries, for allowing us to work with them to create this incredible space.

This award is especially close to our hearts because as the AIA explains, it:

demonstrates the power of architecture to shape business performance, to improve peoples' lives and provide a value added service to clients in a business setting that far exceeds the costs of that service.

AIA Connecticut Design Commission honors Beinfield Architecture once again in 2011

We are thrilled to announce Beinfield Architecture's 2011 AIA CT Design Award for their new single family Home in Ridgefield.  This incredible house definitely makes our list of favorite projects and clients.  Congratulations to Andrew Bartolotta AIA, Bruce Beinfield FAIA and the rest of the Project Team for the creativity, hard work, and attention to detail that made this project come to fruition.  Oh, and we had some fun too.

This is what the jurors had to say about the project:

This project is based on simple space and volumetric strategies. It provides a simple but effective stage for collections, a stage setting for the content of the building. The traditional heavy post and beam construction makes sense of the chaos of the collection. The New England barn is ideal for a collection such as this, providing form, but observers can see that something else is going on here. There are two important elements on the outside, the first is the translucent glass link, a very effective rhythm maker and the second is the “sideness” of the scheme, wherein the front is relatively impenetrable, but there is open glazing on the backside, making for a very different experience.

Stepping Stones Museum for Children and Beinfield Architecture Receive GOLD LEED Certification

Congratulations to the entire Project Team!  Stepping Stones Museum for Children has earned the coveted ranking of LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council! 

The Museum says they "garnered LEED Gold certification because of the solar panels, "green" roof, wind turbine, use of recycled materials throughout the building and [their] focus on related educational stewardship."  The design and program also include energy efficient lighting, storm water management, and a food court offering locally grown, organic produce.

Stepping Stones is now one of only 3 public buildings in the State of Connecticut to achieve the LEED Gold certification.  In case you didn't already know, LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

Beinfield Architecture is incredibly proud to be part of this groundbreaking project.

Beinfield wins AIA CT Design Award for Volo!

You'll remember how proud we are of our new Fixed Base of Operations for Volo Aviation.  Well, the Connecticut Chapter of the American Institute of Architects has announced Beinfield and the Volo project as recipients of a 2010 Design Award for Excellence!
