Beinfield Architecture is bringing it to New Haven via Corsair, another mixed-use opportunity to do what they do best, bringing life back to urban blight with historically articulate design. Value added – necessary residential housing, enriching amenities, and communal public spaces.
The predominantly red brick neighborhood long time in disrepair has a history going back to the 1880’s when there were more goats than anything else roaming the streets. Blue collar industries flourished there; Elm City Dye Works, MB Airplane Manufacturing, and later Star refrigeration.
Preservation
plans include recycled steel and wooden beams from the original
structure, as well as glass and glazing systems and salvaged
cast-concrete relief panels that have images related to the 1943 MB Manufacturing
company located on the State Street portion where airplane parts were
made during World War II. The Lawrence Street façade will remain, as it
complements the small square across the street at the intersections of
Mechanic, Lawrence and State streets, and along Mechanic Street, the
apartments will have front porches and gardens in keeping with the residential
style of the neighborhood.

Due
for completion in 2016, Corsair will feature 235 apartments with 275 parking spaces
in an attached garage, 12,000 square feet of amenity space, 20,000
sq.ft. courtyard and 4,000 square ft. of ground floor retail.
Property amenities include a large fitness center with yoga studio, resident lounge
spaces with high speed WiFi, a library, a resort style pool enclosed within a
private ½ acre courtyard, a 7,000 sq.ft. roof deck with views of downtown New Haven and East Rock, a dog wash station, and a bike maintenance room with storage for 240 bikes.
